Video on ScrollStack, defying the tyranny of virality

Short form video on platforms like TikTok and its many clones is an epic wasteland at the moment. The experience gives pause even to an optimist like me who believes that quality should not be judged too harshly in the early days of a new medium.

Scrollstack is a tool for creators to defy the ‘laws of physics’ of the Big Tech platforms - algorithmic feeds that make money from advertising fueling a relentless race for clicks. Short form video is the latest and probably purest form of this race to the bottom. Neither viewers nor creators have control over what anyone sees in the feed . Everyone other than the advertiser is a sideshow. And the irony is that even after chasing millions of views 99 percent of creators earn nothing from all their work.

ScrollStack offers creators an option to engage directly with their true fans and offer free, exclusive and paid content or seek contributions for their work (“A thousand true fans” the essay that first articulated the idea in 2008 is more relevant than ever).

Creators can now post video “digital good” on ScrollStack for download (streaming coming soon). Here is a 4K clip of a video from the quarter finals between Leyla Fernandez and Elina Svitolina.

There are three advantages for video creators:

  1. You can add context and create a logically linked series of videos (e.g., for a tutorial) which is not possible on algorithmic feeds.

  2. It’s your brand, your feed, and you can distribute directly to your followers (on WhatsApp or by Email).

  3. The video posts works with your social media audience - you can share links to your paid or free posts and/or links to your bio/profile seeking contributions for your feed on ScrollStack.
